Adding Carbon To Sponge Filter

DaleM

  • #ane
Howdy all,

I purchased an Aqua One Filter Air lx Sponge Filter (Australian company and only available in Oz and very few other countries as far as I know). I will use it in my master tank so I can bandy it to a qt as required. It's designed more for fry tanks I believe so they don't go sucked up in filters.

Information technology is advertised as having a hollow centre so carbon can exist added (still haven't figured out how to access the hollow centre though).

Has anyone had whatsoever experience with this filter or does calculation the carbon exercise much? I imagine in a 130L tank information technology probably wouldn't do much. I have ii HOBs running which take carbon cartridges, just I prefer to do without these then I tin add ceramic noodles equally another biological filtration source.

Thanks!

Here is a link to the filter FYI: Filter Air lx Air Filter 8.5Wx24Hx8.5Dcm

Activated carbon actually has very specific purposes that'southward not necessary at all for most healthy aquariums and so the question naturally is, why practise you lot want to add together carbon?

If you lot're non sure about what y'all want to actually reach with carbon or you're non sure what carbon actually serves as, chances are you don't demand it.

Used to help keep the water clear by and large. I know nearly people use it to become rid of meds, whilst others utilize information technology to remove any oraganic/inorganic materials from the water. I'yard in the latter campsite. I get about 3-four weeks out of a carbon cartridge before it loses its effectiveness. Information technology works out cheaper in the long run to buy the carbon in pellets, only no room to put them in a filter bag and add together to my HOBs. Hence I was floating with the thought of adding them to the sponge, though I'grand doubting how effective it'll be.

The tap water here has a lot of dissolved minerals - not chancy to fish, but enough that the water can get a scrap dirty once information technology's settled in the tank. The carbon cartridge gets dirty rather quickly.

Idk how constructive carbon is in making your h2o articulate in general as opposed to make information technology articulate from things like meds, excessive fish waste, or tannin. The manner I come across it, since you don't have a specific things you want removed from the water than carbon has been proven to, at that place is no demand for it.

I'm not familiar with that btand only you should be able to pull the sponge of and there should be a hollow stand that it sits on.

Idk how effective carbon is in making your water articulate in full general as opposed to make it clear from things like meds, excessive fish waste product, or tannin. The way I see it, since you don't have a specific things you want removed from the water than carbon has been proven to, there is no need for it.
It definitely helps remove dissolved ions and metals such as manganese, CaCO3, zinc, etc etc which account for a lot of the tds in the h2o. In that location is a noticeable divergence in water clarity between when I run carbon and when I don't. My water changes are a lot clearer (I siphon into a white bucket, then whatever h2o discoloration stands out like a sore thumb) when running carbon.

I've tried pulling apart the sponge, simply tin can't access the hollow core as there are plastic fittings in place, simply at that place is a way equally the sponge is replaceable. I probably just need to utilise a bit of muscle

The top plastic fiting on mine comes off but it does require a hard twist and yank.

The top plastic fiting on mine comes off just information technology does require a hard twist and yank.
Cool absurd! I'm a scrap hesitant every bit I've broken many things by twisting and yanking too hard

So was I at start but since I figured it thevsponge needed cleaning or replacing it didnt matter.
So the peak role where the hose connects? That sounds similar the logical place for it to disconnect

It was on mine but information technology could be the summit or lesser that comes off with yours. I know its not much help and the product website is blockedbin china so I couldnt have a look
